Role: Lead Design, Product Strategy, Research

A design study and proposal for a learning garden for the disabled. The study analyzed complex site conditions, existing precedents and community input.

Collaborators: Barrington Farm School, Wildish Design & Research

Design Objectives

Create an engaging and experiential land art installation that brings together the following interests:

  • Experientially teach patrons about the dangers of sea level rise, habitat change, climate change.

  • Share the unique ecological regions (habitat types) of the reserve.

  • Integrate wildlife habitat (esp. avian and apian species) into the object.

  • Aesthetically “blend” object into the site.

  • Create a collaborative design and construction process.

Design Response

The design response integrated a iteration between construction and design product involving many collaborators:

  • 5 towers are purposefully positioned across the reserve in unique ecological zones to highlight their uniqueness and potential for change.

  • Towers are datum markers to measure and express the potential effects of sea level rise and 100 yr storm events for the years 2050 and 2100.

  • Each tower is represented by an important 20th Century environmentalist and their respective interesting in a particular eco-type, i.e. wetland = Marjorie Stoneman-Douglas.

  • A quote from their respective seminal text are translated into morse code and imprinted on the tower, as well as turned into apian habitat.
